November 29, 2005 - DANVILLE, VA – It was announced today that Danville’s third baseman Eric Campbell and pitcher Jairo Cuevas were named to the 12-player Topps’ Class A-Short Season/Rookie League All-Star team for 2005.
Eric Campbell (20) of Owensville, IN, was one of the two Danville players on the team. He dominated the Appalachian League in power statistics, leading with 26 doubles, 18 homers, 64 RBIs, 77 runs scored and a .634 slugging percentage. His home run total was the best among all short-season players. The doubles, home runs, RBI, and runs scored all set Danville team records while the runs scored total also bested the Appalachian League record (72) set back in 1961 and tied in 1964. Campbell also shared the league co-MVP award with fellow Danville Braves catcher Max Ramirez.
Jairo Cuevas (21) of the Dominican Republic, was the second Danville player named to the team. The right-hander was too much for Appalachian hitters, who had a .179 average against him. He allowed just 35 hits in 55 innings, while striking out 69. He ranked second in the league with a 1.95 ERA and tied for second with six wins. The Appalachian League managers also picked Cuevas as the Pitcher of the Year during the 2005 campaign.
The Danville Braves are owned and operated by the Atlanta Braves, and have been the Appalachian League affiliate of the Braves since 1993. Opening Day 2006 is June 21st vs. the Burlington Indians.
